Havana, the capital of Cuba, is one of fourteen provinces with a population of 2 million inhabitants. Founded in 1519, Havana flourished during the 18th and 19th centuries under Spanish rule. It was during this time period that new buildings were built in the architecture visible throughout the city. Likewise, during the 19th and 20th centuries, under American influence, the city continued to grow and prosper with hotels, casinos, and splendid night clubs being constructed. Later on in the 20th century when Fidel Castro came to power, the city experienced broad transformations. Old Havana, the historical center of the city, was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 and boasts some of the best colonial architecture of Latin America.

Havana's predominant climate is of the warm tropical type, with a rainy season in the summer. As to its geographical location, Havana is in the next latitude to the Tropic of Cancer, which entails the reception of high amounts of solar radiation throughout the year, determining the warm character of its climate. In Havana, temperatures are generally high. The annual means go from 24ºC in the plains to 26ºC.

The Playas del Este (Eastern Beaches) are just 20-30 minutes from Havana on the coast road to Varadero. Full of sun worshippers and local flavor, these sands have something of a daytime-disco-by-the-sea atmosphere.
